Comparison of airway assessment tests for prediction of difficult intubation in obese patients: importance of thyromental height and upper lip bite test.
Prediction of difficult intubation (DI) has remained challenging for anesthesiologists and validity of airway assessment tests has not been fully investigated. This study aims to compare predictive values of these tests for prediction of DI in obese patients. ⋯ TMH and ULBT had the highest sensitivity for prediction of DI in obese patients in this study and it is recommended to be considered as part of airway assessment in this patient population.

Randomized Controlled Trial Multicenter StudyPre- and apnoeic high-flow oxygenation for rapid sequence intubation in the emergency department (the Pre-AeRATE trial): A multicentre randomised controlled trial.
Evidence regarding the efficacy of high-flow nasal cannula (HFNC) oxygenation for preoxygenation and apnoeic oxygenation is conflicting. Our objective is to evaluate whether HFNC oxygenation for preoxygenation and apnoeic oxygenation maintains higher oxygen saturation (SpO2) during rapid sequence intubation (RSI) in ED patients compared to usual care. ⋯ Use of HFNC for preoxygenation and apnoeic oxygenation, when compared to usual care, did not improve lowest SpO2 during the first intubation attempt but may prolong safe apnoea time.

Endotracheal intubation is a lifesaving procedure frequently performed in emergency departments. It is associated with some potential risks. Rapid and reliable confirmation of endotracheal tube placement during intubation is critical. Nurses play an important role in the care of patients in various settings. Ultrasound can be performed and interpreted not only by physicians but also by nurses. The aim of this study was to evaluate how well nurses without previous ultrasound experience can determine both esophageal and tracheal localization of endotracheal tubes in cadavers after a short ultrasound training. ⋯ The results support that ultrasound can be performed by nurses for the confirmation for esophageal and tracheal intubations quickly and accurately.
