Quadratus Lumborum Block Spares Postoperative Opioid Usage but Does Not appear to Prevent the Development of Chronic Pain After Gastrointestinal Surgery.
Regional anesthesia has been used to reduce acute postsurgical pain and to prevent chronic pain. The best technique, however, remains controversial. ⋯ Ultrasound-guided QLB provided superior short-term analgesia and reduced oxycodone consumption and the incidence of PONV after gastrointestinal surgery. However, the incidence of chronic pain was not significantly affected by this anesthetic technique.

Acupuncture as an adjunctive treatment for pain in hospitalized children with sickle cell disease.
Acute episodes of pain associated with sickle cell disease (SCD) account for over 100,000 hospitalizations and expenses of nearly one billion dollars annually in the U.S. New treatment approaches are needed as the current opioid based therapy is often inadequate in controlling pain, resulting in prolonged inpatient stays, and high rates of readmission. ⋯ Acupuncture was broadly accepted and well-tolerated in our study population. Acupuncture treatment was associated with a statistically significant and clinically meaningful reduction in pain scores immediately following the treatments, and a trend towards a reduction in length of stay and readmission for pain.

Effectiveness of placebo interventions for patients with non-specific low back pain: a systematic review.
Little is known about the effectiveness of placebo interventions in patients with nonspecific low back pain (LBP). This systematic review assessed the magnitude of the effects of placebo interventions as compared to no intervention in randomized controlled trials (RCTs) including patients with LBP. Embase, MEDLINE (Ovid), and Cochrane CENTRAL databases were searched from inception to December 5, 2019. ⋯ These results show placebo interventions are more effective than no intervention at short-term follow-up in patients with chronic LBP. However, the magnitude of the effects is probably not clinically relevant (approximately 8 points on a 0-100 pain scale). Future research should identify effect modifiers and causal mechanisms explaining the short-term effects of placebo interventions in patients with chronic LBP.

It is common practice to use pain quality indicators (QI) to accurately assess the medical care situation of patients. This literature review identifies the status quo of acute pain QI among adult inpatients. ⋯ European studies comprehensively comparing acute pain management results are currently missing. Thus, this report highlights the need to develop consensus-based quality indicators in management of acute pain, which take into account both the methodologic quality and the relevance to clinical practice.

Pain Management in Patients with Severe Pemphigus Vulgaris.
To describe the pain management and clinical course of patients with severe Pemphigus Vulgaris (PV) admitted to a third-level Intensive Care Unit (ICU). This was a retrospective cohort study conducted in the Instituto Nacional de Ciencias Médicas y Nutrición Salvador Zubirán over the period 2013-2020. Study population comprised patients with severe PV admitted to the ICU. ⋯ Opioids remain the mainstay for acute pain control in patients with severe PV. Biological, psychological, and social factors influence patients' daily opioid requirements and dose escalation. Successful pain management contributes to improving the quality of life, and the suppression and remission of PV.
