Long-Term Prognosis Following Early Rehabilitation in the ICU: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
Critically ill patients often have residual functional disabilities. Studies have shown that early rehabilitation improves short-term physical function. However, it remains unknown whether early rehabilitation affects long-term prognosis and healthcare resource utilization. ⋯ Starting rehabilitation within 3 days of ICU admission was associated with shorter durations of future hospitalization and lower healthcare costs. Early rehabilitation for ICU patients might be associated with reduced healthcare resource utilization.

Observational StudyPerioperative risk factors associated with unplanned neurological intensive care unit readmission following elective supratentorial brain tumor resection.
The aim of this study was to describe the clinical and procedural risk factors associated with the unplanned neurosurgical intensive care unit (NICU) readmission of patients after elective supratentorial brain tumor resection and serves as an exploratory analysis toward the development of a risk stratification tool that may be prospectively applied to this patient population. ⋯ A predictive model that included age, lesion type, KPS < 70 at admission, duration of surgery, retention of endotracheal intubation on NICU entry, and NICU LOS after surgery had an acceptable ability to identify elective supratentorial brain tumor resection patients at high risk for an unplanned NICU readmission. These risk factors and this prediction model may facilitate better resource allocation in the NICU and improve patient outcomes.

Observational StudyPleural effusion and thoracentesis in ICU patients: A longitudinal observational cross-sectional study.
Pleural effusion is common among patients in the intensive care unit (ICU) but reported prevalence varies. Thoracentesis may improve respiratory status, however, indications for this are unclear. We aimed to explore prevalence, development, and progression of pleural effusion, and the incidence and effects of thoracentesis in adult ICU patients. ⋯ Pleural effusion was common in the ICU, but less than half of all patients with ultrasonographically significant pleural effusion underwent thoracentesis. Progression of pleural effusion without thoracentesis showed reduced volumes on subsequent days.

Experiences of Parents of Children With Medical Complexity in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit: A Scoping Review.
Medical advances and decreased mortality rates in the pediatric intensive care unit have increased the number of children surviving illnesses they may not have survived previously. The term child with medical complexity is poorly defined. ⋯ This review is the first to examine the experiences of parents of children with medical complexity in the pediatric intensive care unit. The study was limited by lack of available research and lack of consensus for the definition of child with medical complexity. However, this review describes strategies that nurses may find useful when caring for parents of children with medical complexity.
