How many of the COVID-19 deaths occurred in the Intensive Care Unit?
The percentage of overall COVID-19 deaths which occurred in intensive care units (ICU) is unknown. We estimated 18% in Italy from February 21, 2020, to February 21, 2021, using cumulative numbers from publicly available databases. This study aims to confirm this percentage using raw data from Italian and European registries. ⋯ The percentage of COVID-19 deaths which occurred in European ICUs was 16% and consistent across different countries, ranging from 10% to 22%. Interestingly, we observed no difference between pandemic waves and intra-pandemic periods.

Risk Factors for Longer Pediatric Intensive Care Unit Length of Stay Among Children Who Required Escalation of Care Within 24 Hours of Admission.
Children who require early escalation of care (EOC) to the pediatric intensive care unit (PICU) after floor admission have higher mortality and increased hospital length of stay (LOS) as compared with direct emergency department (ED) admissions. This study was designed to identify subgroups of patients within this cohort (EOC to PICU within 24 hours of hospital admission) who have worse outcomes (actual PICU LOS [aLOS] > predicted PICU LOS [pLOS]). ⋯ Among patients who required EOC to PICU, risk factors associated with aLOS > pLOS were patients who required EOC to PICU longer than 6 hours after admission to the hospital and patients admitted to the floor as a transfer from referral hospitals.

Clustering analysis of geriatric and acute characteristics in a cohort of very old patients on admission to ICU.
The biological and functional heterogeneity in very old patients constitutes a major challenge to prognostication and patient management in intensive care units (ICUs). In addition to the characteristics of acute diseases, geriatric conditions such as frailty, multimorbidity, cognitive impairment and functional disabilities were shown to influence outcome in that population. The goal of this study was to identify new and robust phenotypes based on the combination of these features to facilitate early outcome prediction. ⋯ Phenotyping of very old patients on admission to ICU revealed new phenotypes with different mortality and potential need for anticipatory intervention.

Assessment of Good Practice Guidelines for Administration of Drugs via Feeding Tubes by a Clinical Pharmacist in the Intensive Care Unit.
In intensive care units, patients are frequently unable to take oral drugs because of orotracheal intubation or sedation. ⋯ Implementation of good practice guidelines by a multidisciplinary team in the intensive care unit significantly improved practices for administering crushed, opened, and dissolved oral forms of drugs by feeding tube.

Intermediate or Intensive Care Unit Admission across Race and Ethnicity.
The aim of this study was to assess the association between race and ethnicity and admission to intermediate (IMCUs) or intensive care units (ICUs) among hospitalized patients. ⋯ Among hospitalized patients, racial minorities are slightly more likely to use higher levels of care, whereas Hispanic patients are generally slightly less likely than non-Hispanic White patients to use higher levels of care. Further evaluation is needed to identify reasons for disparate IMCU or ICU admission.
