Unmasking the Truth of Health Care Workers' Well-being During the COVID-19 Pandemic.
Burnout is a well-documented multifactorial phenomenon that affects up to 47% of intensive care unit staff at some point in their career. The literature highlights increased rates of anxiety, depression, and posttraumatic stress disorder among staff as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic. ⋯ COVID-19 has brought unique mental health challenges and stressors to intensive care unit staff. By adapting and expanding resources, hospitals can improve staff resiliency and mitigate some mental health concerns with the aim of decreasing the overall psychological impact of the pandemic.

Following aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH), patients are monitored closely for vasospasm in the intensive care unit. Conditional vasospasm-free survival describes the risk of future vasospasm as a function of time elapsed without vasospasm. Conditional survival has not been applied to this clinical scenario but could improve patient counseling and intensive care unit use. The objective of this study was to characterize conditional vasospasm-free survival following SAH. ⋯ Conditional survival provides a useful framework for counseling patients and making decisions around vasospasm risk for patients with aneurysmal SAH, while risk factor-stratified plots facilitate a patient-centric, evidence-based approach to these conversations and decisions.

Predictions of functional outcome in neurocritical care (NCC) patients impact care decisions. This study compared the predictive values (PVs) of good and poor functional outcome among health care providers with and without NCC training. ⋯ Neurointensivists expected better outcomes than other providers and were better at predicting poor functional outcomes. The PV of a good outcome prediction was modest among all providers.

Interventional Pulmonology and the Esophagus: Tracheostomy and Percutaneous Endoscopic Gastrostomy Placement.
Tracheostomy is a procedure commonly performed in intensive care units (ICU) for patients who are unable to be weaned from mechanical ventilation. Both percutaneous and surgical techniques have been validated and are chosen based on the local expertise available. ⋯ This decreases the need for additional sedation, interruption of anticoagulation, repeat transfusion, and coordination of care between multiple services. In the context of COVID-19, combined tracheostomy and gastrostomy placement exposes less health care providers overall and minimizes transportation needs.

Observational StudyPredictive Factors for Postoperative Intensive Care Unit Admission and Mechanical Ventilation After Cardiac Catheterization for Pediatric Pulmonary Vein Stenosis.
To investigate the predictive factors for postoperative intensive care unit (ICU) admission and mechanical ventilation (MV) after cardiac catheterization for pediatric pulmonary vein stenosis (PVS). ⋯ The incidences of postoperative ICU admission and MV in this subgroup were relatively high. The identification of risk factors is useful in predicting and triaging the need for postoperative ICU admission and MV for the improvement of patient care.
