Introduction and objectives. Secondary bacterial infections (SBIs) contribute to worse in-hospital outcomes in patients with Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19). Treatment with proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) is associated with an increased risk of bacterial infections in different clinical settings. ⋯ PPI treatment prior to hospital admission for COVID-19 is associated with an increased risk of SBIs and SBS. In addition, it interacts with SBS in predicting in-hospital prognosis. An appropriate use of PPIs may attenuate the risk of adverse clinical outcomes during hospitalization for COVID-19.

The performance of host immune responses biomarkers and clinical scores was compared to identify infection patient populations at risk of progression to sepsis, ICU admission and mortality. ⋯ Patients exhibiting low severity signs of infection but high IL-10 levels showed an elevated probability of developing sepsis. Combining IL-10 with the NEWS score provides a reliable tool for predicting the progression from infection to sepsis at an early stage. Utilizing IL-6 in the emergency room can help identify patients with low NEWS or SIRS scores.

Influence of contrast medium on long-term renal function and outcomes in patients with septic acute kidney injury: A propensity-matched cohort study.
To investigate the relationship between contrast medium administration and long-term mortality and renal function in patients with septic acute kidney injury (AKI). ⋯ The administration of intravenous contrast medium was not associated with long-term mortality, deterioration of renal function, or dialysis in patients with septic AKI.

This study investigated the molecular mechanism of quercetin in the treatment of sepsis using network pharmacological prediction and experimentation. ⋯ Alox5 may be involved in the occurrence and development of multi-organ functional disturbances in sepsis and is a reliable target of quercetin against sepsis.

Dynamic monitoring of the blood-brain barrier (BBB) functional status in septic mice can help to explore the pathological mechanisms. Therefore, we proposed a new method for monitoring BBB permeability and applied it to the detection of sepsis models. ⋯ We have successfully demonstrated the feasibility of our novel method to detect BBB permeability in mice. Our results revealed a significant difference in the BBB permeability change trend between the CLP and LPS model mice when survival curves were consistent. Notably, the CLP-model mice demonstrated a closer resemblance to clinical patients. Our findings suggest that early-stage brain tissue hypoperfusion has a greater impact on BBB function damage in endotoxemia mice, which is related to the faster progression of blood flow redistribution.
