Spontaneous muscle contraction with extreme pain after thoracotomy treated by pulsed radiofrequency.
Chronic post thoracotomy pain (CPTP) was a common complication after thoracotomy, while spontaneous muscle contraction (SMC) was very rare. Neuropathic pain components appeared in some CPTP patients. The patients with neuropathic pain (NPP) often suffered from more severe pain. ⋯ Pulsed radiofrequency provided good efficacy in CPTP with SMC in this case.

Implications of bariatric surgery on chronic pain and opioid use.

The topics addressed in this report are implications of bariatric surgery or weight loss surgery on chronic pain and opioid use, what to expect with regards to pain control, and the need to change opioid dose after bariatric surgery.

Chronic opioid pain management for chronic kidney disease.
Questions from patients about pain conditions, pain treatment, and responses from authors are presented to help educate patients and make them effective self-advocates. The topics addressed in this issue are renal or kidney failure and chronic pain management with opioids, morphine, and oxycodone effect in the body over a period of time. This includes process of absorption, distribution, localization in tissues, biotransformation and excretion in chronic kidney disease, expected side effects and recommendations.

Sensory nerve fibers innervating the ocular anterior surface detect external stimuli producing innocuous and painful sensations. Protons are among the first mediators released by damaged cells during inflammation, tissue injury, or other chronic ophthalmic conditions. We studied whether acid-sensing ion channels (ASICs) are expressed in corneal sensory neurons and their roles in the response to moderate acidifications of the ocular surface and in pathologies producing ocular surface inflammation. ⋯ Our results show that, in addition to the established role of TRPV1, ASICs play a significant role in the detection of acidic insults at the ocular surface. The identification of ASICs in corneal neurons and their alterations during different diseases is critical for the understanding of sensory ocular pathophysiology. They are likely to mediate some of the discomfort sensations accompanying several ophthalmic formulations and may represent novel targets for the development of new therapeutics for ocular pathologies.
