The purpose of this study was to evaluate the clinical efficacy of internal fixation with locking compression plates (LCP) in the treatment of patients with extremity fractures and the effect on the recovery of limb function. A total of 488 patients with extremity fractures admitted to our hospital from June 2019 to December 2022 were retrospectively analyzed and divided into open reduction and internal fixation (ORIF) group (n = 236) and internal fixation with LCP group (n = 252) according to the surgical procedure. Outcome indicators included intraoperative bleeding, operative time, length of hospital stay, pain duration, quality of life, healing time of the fracture, postoperative complications, and restoration of limb function as per the X-ray examination results and Johner-Wruhs criteria. ⋯ The recovery of limb function was significantly better in the LCP group than in the ORIF group (97.22% vs 85.17%, P < .001). The overall satisfaction rate of treatment in the LCP group was higher than that in the ORIF group (92.06% vs 81.90%, P < .001). Internal fixation with LCP in patients with extremity fractures can effectively promote the recovery of limb function, reduce the incidence of complications and improve the quality of life of patients.

Cephalic arch stenosis (CAS) is critical point to maintain functional arteriovenous fistula (AVF) in patients undergoing hemodialysis with brachio-cephalic AVFs. In this study, we aimed to determine the effectiveness of dual outflow (cephalic and basilic veins) as a surgical method to prevent CAS. Between July 2016 and December 2019, 369 patients underwent upper arm AVF creation. ⋯ The primary-assisted patency rates at 12 months were 87.0% for BCAVFs and 93.2% for BCBAVFs, respectively (P = .145). Secondary patency rates at 12 months were 92.2% for BCAVFs and 93.2% for BCBAVFs, respectively (P = .023). Compared to BCAVF, traditional upper arm AVF, upper arm AVF with cephalic and basilic vein dual drainage can be optimal surgical method to preventing CAS.

Urinary dysfunction triggered by varicella-zoster virus (VZV) attacking the nervous system seriously affects the quality of life of patients and may even cause irreversible damage to the urinary system. This a 62-year-old man with acute urinary retention triggered by VZV, who was cured after acupuncture treatment. The rational application of acupuncture therapy to promote the recovery of bladder contraction function can effectively relieve the symptoms of dysuria, shorten the course of the disease. ⋯ This study demonstrates that acupuncture is safe and effective in the treatment of acute urinary retention caused by VZV, which is worth recommending as a conservative treatment. Moreover, we found that the early intervention and full-term treatment with acupuncture is particularly important, provided that the right key acupoints are selected.

Cardiovascular sequelae of hyperthyroidism: A rare case report of thyrotoxic cardiomyopathy.
This case report highlights a distinctive presentation of cardiovascular sequelae arising from hyperthyroidism, shedding light on a rarely observed condition within the medical literature. The unique aspects of this case contribute valuable insights to our understanding of the intricate relationship between thyroid dysfunction and cardiac complications. ⋯ This case is a poignant reminder of the interplay between endocrine and cardiovascular systems. The unique presentation of thyrotoxic cardiomyopathy in the context of hyperthyroidism expands our knowledge of potential cardiovascular sequelae. Clinicians are urged to consider such intricate connections and remain vigilant for atypical cardiac manifestations in patients with thyroid dysfunction. Timely intervention and tailored management strategies are paramount in mitigating the impact of these rare yet clinically significant conditions.

The dedifferentiation process of tumorigenesis and somatic cell reprogramming has some commonness and differences, which is the key question to cancer therapeutic strategy and stem cell applications. To further explore the commonalities and variance between carcinogenesis and induced pluripotent stem cell reprogramming, we investigated the role of stemness factors OSKM (OCT4, SOX2, KLF4, and MYC) in the pan-cancer process using public clinical data. Expression of OSKM in human pan-cancer was analyzed via the Genotype Tissue Expression (GTEx) and The Cancer Genome Atlas (TCGA) database based on the RNA-seq data of tissues. ⋯ In addition, correlation analysis revealed the relevance of OSKM genes to patient prognosis, cancer cell stemness, tumor microenvironment or immune checkpoint. However, there is little similarity between these genes in terms of how they function in each cancer type. This study elucidates the different roles of core stemness factors OSKM in pan-cancer, offering potential therapeutic targets for novel anti-cancer strategies and knowledge to minimize the potential carcinogenic effects during stem cell transplantation.
