The aim of this study was to predict acute postsurgical pain and coping with pain following surgery based on preoperative time perspectives. Time perspective is a basic dimension of psychological time. It is a tendency to focus on a particular time area: the past, the present and the future. ⋯ Our research indicates that a preoperative past-negative time perspective is a significant predictor of acute postsurgical pain intensity and the strongest predictor of pain catastrophizing.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Systemic lidocaine fails to improve postoperative morphine consumption, postoperative recovery and quality of life in patients undergoing posterior spinal arthrodesis. A double-blind, randomized, placebo-controlled trial.
It is inconclusive whether the perioperative administration of systemic lidocaine provides effective postoperative analgesia and enhances recovery in major orthopaedic surgery. We hypothesised that in adolescent and adult patients undergoing posterior spinal arthrodesis, a perioperative lidocaine infusion would reduce opioid requirements during the first 24 postoperative h. ⋯ Eudra CT 2012-005264-98.

Case Reports
Postoperative real-time electrocardiography monitoring detects myocardial ischemia: a case report.
This case report outlines the utility and challenges of remote continuous postoperative electrocardiography ECG) monitoring, which is routed through a secure smartphone to provide real-time detection and management of myocardial ischemia. ⋯ This case report illustrates the use of remote ECG monitoring and clinician response in real time with the use of a smartphone. With each alert, a small ECG strip is transmitted to the smartphone for viewing. In our view, this technology and management system provides a possible means to interrupt myocardial ischemic cascades in real time and prevent postoperative myocardial infarction.

Review Meta Analysis
Risk factors for postoperative delirium following hip fracture repair in elderly patients: a systematic review and meta-analysis.
No formal systematic review or meta-analysis was performed up to now to summarize the risk factors of delirium after hip surgery. ⋯ Related prophylaxis strategies should be implemented in elderly patients involved with above-mentioned risk factors to prevent delirium after hip surgery.

Randomized Controlled Trial
Perioperative Transcutaneous Electrical Acupoint Stimulation for Postoperative Pain Relief Following Laparoscopic Surgery: A Randomized Controlled Trial.
This trial was conducted to assess the influence of transcutaneous electrical acupoint stimulation (TEAS) on postoperative pain intensity and the optimal time of TEAS application during perioperative period in patients undergoing laparoscopic surgery. ⋯ Combination of preoperative TEAS with intraoperative or postoperative TEAS, rather than preoperative TEAS alone, is an effective and safe adjunctive for management of postoperative pain following laparoscopic surgery.
