This large database study assessed whether extended pharmacologic prophylaxis for venous thromboembolism after colon cancer resection was associated with improved oncologic survival. ⋯ Extended pharmacologic prophylaxis after colon cancer resection was independently associated with improved overall and cancer-specific survival. These results suggest a potential antineoplastic effect from heparin derivatives when used in the context of preventing postsurgical venous thromboembolism.

Retrospective paired cohort study comparing internal fixation for undisplaced versus hemiarthroplasty for displaced femoral neck fracture in the elderly.
The debate continues regarding the best treatment for elderly patients with non-displaced femoral neck fractures (FNFs): internal fixation (IF) vs hemiarthroplasty (HA). The Aim of the present study is to compare surgical insult, mortality, complications, and walking recovery after one year in patients older than 65 treated with cannulated screws or HA for FNFs. ⋯ Level III (retrospective comparison of matched cohorts).

Observational StudyIncidence of complications after nonoperating room anesthesia in children in a low- and middle-income country: A prospective and observational study.
Nonoperating room anesthesia is a growing field of medicine that can have an increased risk of complications, particularly in low- and middle-income countries. ⋯ The incidence of complications during NORA among children in our radiology setting remains high. Investigating predictors for morbidity allowed high-risk patient selection, which allowed taking precautions. Several improvement measures were taken to address the organization's insufficiencies.

Bayesian networks for Risk Assessment and postoperative deficit prediction in intraoperative neurophysiology for brain surgery.
To this day there is no consensus regarding evidence of usefulness of Intraoperative Neurophysiological Monitoring (IONM). Randomized controlled trials have not been performed in the past mainly because of difficulties in recruitment control subjects. In this study, we propose the use of Bayesian Networks to assess evidence in IONM. ⋯ Bayesian Networks are an effective way to audit clinical practice within IONM. We have found that IONM warnings can serve to prevent neurological deficits in patients, especially when corrective surgical action is taken to attempt to revert signals changes back to baseline properties. We show that Bayesian Networks could be used as a mathematical tool to calculate the utility of conducting IONM, which could save costs in healthcare when performed.

Femoral neck fractures (FNF) in young and middle-aged adults are primarily caused by high-energy injuries in traffic accidents. Surgical delays often occur due to transportation issues, preoperative evaluations, and economic burdens. ⋯ Early surgical intervention, within a 2-days period after injury, seems to be crucial for young adults with FNF. If CRIF is challenging in some cases, ORIF can be another choice.
