Seaweed consumption and prevalence of depressive symptoms during pregnancy in Japan: Baseline data from the Kyushu Okinawa Maternal and Child Health Study.
Seaweed is a popular traditional food in Japan and is a rich source of bioactive metabolites. The neuroprotective properties of seaweed have attracted attention; to date, however, there has been no epidemiological evidence regarding the relationship between seaweed consumption and depression. The current cross-sectional study investigated the association between seaweed consumption and depressive symptoms during pregnancy in Japan. ⋯ The present results suggest that seaweed consumption may be inversely associated with the prevalence of depressive symptoms during pregnancy in Japanese women.

Since 2005, the International Committee of Medical Journal Editors (ICMJE) requires researchers to prospectively register their clinical trials in a publicly accessible trial registry. The Consolidated Standards of Reporting Trials (CONSORT) statement has supported this policy since 2010. We aimed to evaluate to what extent biomedical journals have incorporated ICMJE's clinical trial registration policy into their editorial and peer review process. ⋯ At least half of the responding journals did not adhere to ICMJE's trial registration policy. Registration should be further promoted among authors, editors and peer reviewers.

A Marjolin's ulcer describes malignant degeneration in any chronic wound. The majority of cases arise in burn scars and are often latent for decades. ⋯ Based on observations and a review of the literature, early detection and aggressive management with wide local excision and prompt coverage yield optimal results when treating patients with Marjolin's ulcers.

Randomized Controlled Trial Comparative StudyCalibrated delivery drape versus indirect gravimetric technique for the measurement of blood loss after delivery: a randomized trial.
Trials of interventions for PPH prevention and treatment rely on different measurement methods for the quantification of blood loss and identification of PPH. This study's objective was to compare measures of blood loss obtained from two different measurement protocols frequently used in studies. ⋯ The study suggests a real and significant difference in blood loss measurement between these methods. Research using blood loss measurement as an endpoint needs to be interpreted taking measurement technique into consideration.

Factors influencing women's decisions to drink alcohol during pregnancy: findings of a qualitative study with implications for health communication.
Despite Australian guidelines advising abstinence from alcohol during pregnancy, a relatively high number of Australian women continue to drink alcohol while pregnant. While some call for greater advocacy of the need for abstinence, others have expressed concern that abstinence messages may be harmful to pregnant women and their unborn babies due to the anxiety they could provoke. We present findings on women's deliberations over drinking alcohol during pregnancy, particularly their emotional dimensions, to inform debates about public health messages and practitioner-patient discussions regarding alcohol use during pregnancy. ⋯ The significance of alcohol to women's identity appeared to be an important reason for continued alcohol use during pregnancy among otherwise risk averse women. Anxiety about alcohol consumption during pregnancy was not widespread. However, obstetricians were an important mediator of this. Health messages that dispel the notion that wine is a "healthy" choice of alcoholic beverage, that provide women with strategies to help them avoid drinking, that advise the broader public not to pressure women to drink if they do not want to, and educate women about the effects of ethanol on maternal and fetal bodies, should be considered.
