Implementation of an Online External Ventricular Drain Training Module-An Educational Initiative to Improve Proficiency of Perioperative Health Care Providers: Results of a Retrospective Study.
An external ventricular drain (EVD) training module may improve the knowledge and proficiency of perioperative health care providers (HCPs). ⋯ This online EVD training module was well-received by participants. Overall, improved scores reflect enhanced knowledge among HCPs following completion of the module. The greatest benefit was observed in those reporting less experience and feeling uncomfortable in managing EVDs. The impact on the reduction in EVD-associated adverse events deserves further examination.

Children admitted to the hospital experience pain. ChildKind International (CKI) is an organization dedicated to improving the quality of pediatric pain care worldwide. In 2019, BC Children hospital (BCCH) clinicians set out to achieve this certification. A qualitative study was performed in order to fully comprehend the current state of pain assessment and management at BCCH. ⋯ Pain management and treatment of children in the hospital remain inconsistent and inadequate. ChildKind certification will help hospitals to address this gap in their clinical practice.

Maternal Cardiovascular Morbidity Events Following Preeclampsia: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
Patients with preeclampsia are at high risk for long-term cardiovascular events, yet the short-term, acute cardiovascular complications that follow preeclampsia are understudied. The objective of this study was to compare the short-term, acute maternal cardiovascular morbidity events after delivery among patients with a diagnosis of preeclampsia versus those without this diagnosis. ⋯ Patients with both preeclampsia and preeclampsia with severe features have higher rates of maternal cardiovascular morbidity events than those without preeclampsia. Future studies are necessary to examine which patients with preeclampsia are at highest risk for cardiovascular complications.

Utilization of Wearable Pedometer Devices in the Perioperative Period: A Qualitative Systematic Review.
Functional capacity assessment is important for perioperative risk stratification; however, there are currently limited options for objective and economical functional capacity evaluation. Pedometer functions are now widely available in mobile devices and offer a nonintrusive and objective approach to measuring patient activity level over time. Therefore, we conducted this systematic review to assess the value of pedometer readings in predicting perioperative outcomes. ⋯ In addition, in-hospital postoperative pedometer readings correlated with postdischarge complications and readmissions. Perioperative pedometer data demonstrated consistent and biologically plausible association with perioperative outcomes. Further studies are needed to validate the use of pedometer in the perioperative period and to identify the optimal approach for its use to potentially improve patient outcomes.

Commonly cited studies have reported substantial improvements (defined as >20%) in process measure compliance after implementation of colorectal enhanced recovery programs (ERPs). However, hospitals have anecdotally reported difficulties in achieving similar improvement gains. This study evaluates improvement uniformity among 151 hospitals exposed to an 18-month implementation protocol for 6 colorectal ERP process measures (oral antibiotics, mechanical bowel preparation, multimodal pain control, early mobilization, early liquid intake, and early solid intake). ⋯ Contrary to published ERP literature, the majority of study hospitals had difficulty improving process compliance with 80% of the opportunities not achieving substantial improvement. This discordance between ERP implementation success rates reported in the literature and what is observed in a large sample could reflect differences in hospitals' culture or characteristics, or a publication bias. Attention needs to be directed toward improving ERP adoption across the spectrum of hospital types.
