The incidence of central venous catheter-related thrombosis and the long-term effects of thrombosis on catheterized veins in neonates is unknown. We therefore determined the incidence of central venous thrombosis, identified associated risk factors, and evaluated outcomes at 6 months. ⋯ Covert central venous thrombosis is frequent in neonates who have central venous catheters, and complications are most common in patients who have large intravascular thrombi. Neonates with large intravascular thrombi should be followed, and considered for anticoagulation.

Risk of Acute Complications with Rocuronium versus Cisatracurium in Patients with Chronic Kidney Disease: A Propensity-Matched Study.
Neuromuscular blocking agents (NMBAs) play an integral role in modern anesthesia by facilitating endotracheal tube placement, assisting with mechanical ventilation, and creating optimal surgical conditions. However, NMBAs can have deleterious side effects. The purpose of this study was to retrospectively analyze acute complications of 2 pharmacodynamically similar but pharmacokinetically different NMBAs and their respective reversal agents. ⋯ From 2003 to 2023, patients who were administered rocuronium plus sugammadex were at a significantly higher risk for acute cardiovascular and pulmonary complications when compared to patients who were administered cisatracurium plus neostigmine.

The development of nonopioid analgesics for the treatment of abdominal pain is a pressing clinical problem. To address this, we examined the expression of Gi/o-coupled receptors, which typically inhibit nociceptor activation, in colonic sensory neurons. This led to the identification of the orphan receptor GPR35 as a visceral analgesic drug target because of its marked coexpression with transient receptor potential ankyrin 1 (TRPA1), a mediator of noxious mechanotransduction in the bowel. ⋯ Consistent with this mechanism of action, we confirmed that TRPA1-mediated colonic contractions evoked by SP release were abolished by CS pretreatment in a GPR35-dependent manner. Our data demonstrate that GPR35 agonists prevent the activation and sensitisation of colonic nociceptors through the inhibition of TRPA1-mediated SP release. These findings highlight the potential of GPR35 agonists to deliver nonopioid analgesia for the treatment of abdominal pain.

Recent advances in flow diverter (FD) therapy for intracranial aneurysms have highlighted the need to evaluate risk factors for in-stent stenosis (ISS), a potentially serious complication. This meta-analysis aims to identify risk factors associated with an increased risk of ISS after FD treatment. ⋯ This meta-analysis identified both nonmodifiable (younger age, male sex) and modifiable (smoking) patient factors, as well as high-risk aneurysm characteristics (posterior circulation, fusiform, ruptured), associated with an increased risk of ISS after FD treatment. These findings highlight the importance of tailored monitoring and management approaches for optimizing outcomes in FD therapy.

Chronic kidney disease (CKD)-related vascular calcification (VC) is a common degenerative phenomenon of the vessel wall and its pathological basis is the phenotypic transformation of vascular smooth muscle cell (VSMCs). Zinc finger and BR-C (Broad-Complex), ttk (tramtrack) and bab (bric à brac) (BTB) domain containing 16 (ZBTB16) has been reported to be expressed in the aortic tissues in a rat model of VC. This work is conducted to reveal the functions of ZBTB16 on VC in CKD and to probe its involved reaction mechanisms. ⋯ Moreover, silencing with ZBTB16 inactivated Wingless-related integration site (Wnt)/β-catenin pathway. LiCl (Wnt/β-catenin agonist) reversed the protective effects of ZBTB16 knockdown on the calcification and osteoblastic transformation in vitro. Together, ZBTB16 silencing may down-regulate Wnt/β-catenin pathway to protect against CKD-associated VC via repressing the osteoblastic transformation of VSMCs.
