To identify the core principles that guide expert intraoperative behaviors and to use these principles to develop a universal framework that defines intraoperative performance. ⋯ This study provides a comprehensive definition of intraoperative expertise, with greater insight into the complex cognitive processes that seem to underlie optimal performance. This framework provides trainees and other nonexperts with the necessary information to use in deliberate practice and the creation of effective thought habits that characterize expert performance. It may help to identify gaps in performance, and to isolate root causes of surgical errors with the ultimate goal of improving patient safety.

The aim of this study was to develop and evaluate the content validity of quality criteria for providing patient- and family-centered injury care. ⋯ Fourteen-candidate quality criteria for patient- and family-centered injury care were developed and shown to have content validity. These may be used to guide quality improvement practices.

To quantify the burden of surgical conditions in Uganda. ⋯ Unmet surgical need is prevalent in Uganda. There is an urgent need to expand the surgical care delivery system starting with the district-level hospitals. Routine surgical data collection at both the health facility and household level should be implemented.

This study aims to develop a Respiratory Failure Risk Score (RFRS) with good predictability for elective abdominal and vascular patients to be used in the outpatient setting for risk stratification and to guide preoperative pulmonary optimization. ⋯ In the preoperative setting, the RFRS can effectively stratify patients into low (<15), moderate low (15-29), moderate high (30-39), and high risk (>39) to assist in patient counseling and guide application of perioperative pulmonary optimization measures.

Functional outcomes of pre-hospital thrombolysis in a mobile stroke treatment unit compared with conventional care: an observational registry study.
Specialised CT-equipped mobile stroke treatment units shorten time to intravenous thrombolysis in acute ischaemic stroke by starting treatment before hospital admission; however, direct effects of pre-hospital thrombolysis on clinical outcomes have not been shown. We aimed to compare 3-month functional outcomes after intravenous thrombolysis in patients with acute ischaemic who had received emergency mobile care or and conventional care. ⋯ Zukunftsfonds Berlin, the Technology Foundation Berlin with EU co-financing by the European Regional Development Fund via Investitionsbank Berlin, and the German Federal Ministry for Education and Research via the Center for Stroke Research Berlin.
