I propose a methodology to compare individual emergency physician (EP) work patterns. This is intended to generate discussion within the specialty. A work pattern graph shows individual EP productivity and, assuming the EPs case selection is similar, can be used to compare group activity. Using a simple mathematical model, an averaged calculation can be made of the number of patients needed to be seen by each treating clinician during a standard shift.

Clinical outcomes of hospitalised individuals with spin-induced exertional rhabdomyolysis.
Exertional rhabdomyolysis (ER) is caused by myocyte breakdown after strenuous physical activity. In recent years, the incidence of spin-induced ER (SER) has been increasing. We describe the clinical characteristics, management and outcomes of patients admitted for SER. ⋯ Inpatient management of SER includes laboratory investigations, analgesia and hydration. Risk of complications is low in SER patients. SER patients without risk factors for complications can be considered for hospital-at-home management with bed rest, aggressive hydration and early outpatient review.

Patient-reported outcome measures are commonly used in clinical trials and have been incorporated into routine clinical care in select specialties but have not been widely implemented in emergency medicine research and clinical care. We describe measurement-related barriers to patient-reported outcome measure use in the emergency department; administrative and practical considerations; implications of developing novel emergency medicine-specific patient-reported outcome measures; and key considerations for the use of patient-reported outcome measures in emergency medicine research and clinical care. ⋯ With this work, we aim to inform barriers and best practices to the use of patient-reported outcome measures in emergency medicine research and clinical care to support future, more widespread implementation of patient-reported outcome measures within emergency care. The successful adoption of patient-reported outcome measures for diverse ED patient populations within the unique constraints of the acute care environment may help researchers, clinicians, and policymakers improve the quality and patient-centeredness of acute care.

Given the popularity of educational blogs and podcasts in medicine, learners and educators need tools to identify trusted and impactful sites. The Social Media Index was a multi-sourced formula to rank the effect of emergency medicine and critical care blogs. In 2022, a key data point for the Social Media Index became unavailable. This bibliometric study aimed to develop a new measure, the Digital Impact Factor, as a replacement. ⋯ The Digital Impact Factor is a measure of the relative effect of educational blogs and podcasts within emergency medicine and critical care.
