Effect of emergency physician-performed pelvic sonography on length of stay in the emergency department.
To evaluate the sensitivity and specificity of emergency physician-performed pelvic sonography (EPPPS) and its effect on length of stay (LOS) in the emergency department. ⋯ Pelvic ultrasound performed by emergency physicians after a brief period of training shortens ED LOS in women in early pregnancy, particularly in those with viable IUPs. This practice appears to be sensitive, specific, and safe.

There are a growing number of emergency physicians (EPs) working in health care abroad. There are, however, no formal training programs for EPs in international health. An International Health Fellowship has been developed to provide training for EPs in public health and international medicine. ⋯ This article outlines the philosophy of a training program in international health, provides an overview of the goals and objectives for such a program, and describes the development of an existing fellowship. The International Health Fellowship will develop leaders in the field of global health by combining clinical expertise, practical field experience, formal public health training, and research and education in international health. Physicians completing a fellowship will be prepared to work within foreign health systems to develop, integrate, and evaluate health care programs on an international scale.

To determine the value of advanced trauma life support (ATLS) training for medical staff in a major incident situation, based upon performance in a simulated exercise. ⋯ Medical staff who have either undertaken the full ATLS course or an abbreviated form of the course were more effective in their management of the simulated trauma cases.

To assess the quality of accident and emergency (A&E) medicine higher specialist training as perceived by current trainees and those who have recently completed training. ⋯ While clinical training is largely satisfactory, areas where higher specialist training could be improved have been identified. Continued development is necessary to meet the challenges of the new specialist registrar grade and opportunities and threats to training in the future are proposed and discussed.

Emergency medicine has been recognized as a specialty in western countries. However, in India, most hospitals and medical colleges have no provision for teaching this specialty. This study was done to assess the feasibility of incorporating emergency medicine in the undergraduate medical curriculum. ⋯ As a specialty that emphasizes basic clinical skills, emergency medicine should be incorporated in the undergraduate medical curriculum.
