Quality in emergency medicine is not a new concept. But applying quality principles to emergency department operations is another thing altogether. While the JCAHO and the American College of Emergency Physicians are examining quality issues in emergency medicine, individual hospitals are looking for solutions to the quality question. And they are accepting the reality that hiring and retaining high-quality physicians remains a key element.

Ethical issues are becoming increasingly complicated. As with all specialties, emergency medicine has ethical dilemmas unique to the field. ⋯ The course is designed for clinical medical students and house officers and is structured around various situations in which the students role-play. The course requires about 20 to 30 hours and covers a variety of topics from consent to treatment and confidentiality to teaching and education in the emergency department.

This article is the second of two parts outlining the objectives for resident rotations in intensive care units. It is part of a larger continuing series on the goals and objectives to direct the training of emergency medicine residents on off-service rotations. ⋯ Critical care medicine is a natural continuum of emergency medicine, and provides the resident with the ability to follow the natural progression of seriously ill patients, as well as build confidence and experience in caring for the critically ill and injured. These objectives are designed to help focus the resident's reading and study during the rotation.
