One of the most important aspects of healthcare knowledge is having a thorough understanding of the triage system which is used in emergency departments. This study aims to assess the level of awareness of Jordanian patients who visit the ED about the triage procedure. ⋯ More investigation is required to determine the causes of the low knowledge of the triage system. The study suggests increasing staffing levels, giving nursing staff ongoing education and training, and integrating technology and automation to reduce the load of patient care.

The impact of recreational cannabis legalization on ED visit rates for acute cannabis intoxication.
In December 2018 the Michigan Regulation and Taxation of Marihuana Act legalized the recreational use of cannabis in Michigan. There are now high potency forms of cannabis readily available in the state, which could result in increased emergency department (ED) visit rates due to intoxication in adults and children. Although cannabis related visits account for a small percentage of all adult and pediatric ED visits, they impose a significant burden on the health care system's resources. This study aimed to assess the impact of the legalization of recreational marijuana on the rate of ED visits for acute cannabis intoxication. ⋯ The legalization of recreational cannabis in Michigan was associated with an immediate increase in ED visit rates for acute cannabis intoxications across all ages, especially among middle-aged adults, in the context of an stably increasing ED visit rate.

Older age and risk for delayed abdominal pain care in the emergency department.
Suboptimal acute pain care has been previously reported to be associated with demographic characteristics. ⋯ In a consecutive series of patients with abdominal pain, advancing age was the only demographic variable associated with prolonged time to initial analgesia. Older patients were found to have a linearly increasing, age-dependent risk for prolonged wait for pain care.

Reducing the door-to-balloon time (D2BT) in ST-elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) patients maximizes myocardial salvage and mitigates morbidity/mortality. ⋯ Nearly half of the patients studied failed to achieve the overall target D2BT for revascularization. The time from arrival at the CHB ED to diagnostic ECG was identified as a substantial contributor to this failure, with a median time almost twice that of the target and a quarter of all patients spending longer than 46.8 min. These findings highlight a need to improve the implementation of ECG triage and interpretation in the ED.

From Their Perspective: Pediatric Patients With Acute Mental Health Needs and Prolonged Emergency Department Stays.
The pediatric emergency department (PED) is experiencing a rising volume of patients with mental health concerns, leading to prolonged boarding times and delays in initiating active therapeutic plans. A paucity of research exists for the self-reported pediatric patient experience during such boarding. ⋯ Patients in mental health crisis boarding in the PED have already experienced stressful life events. By listening to the personal stories of this vulnerable population, the PED can improve care delivery and design a more therapeutic environment, especially as the need for acute mental health management continues to increase.
