Low back pain is common and remains one of the leading causes of disability globally. This study aimed to develop an evidence map of the quantity of available evidence assessing approaches to manage low back pain, to identify potential redundancies or gaps in the synthesized data, and guide future research focus. ⋯ Substantial evidence (systematic reviews and primary trials) exists for 10 approaches to manage low back pain. The quantity of available evidence has continued to increase over time. The quantity and large heterogeneity of inclusion criteria in available systematic reviews may influence conflicting recommendations in clinical practice guidelines. Justification of the need for further systematic reviews and primary trials is essential to avoid potential research redundancy.

Impact of Pain on Postoperative Recovery and Participation in Care Following Knee Arthroplasty Surgery: A Qualitative Descriptive Study.
Patient participation in care is key to optimising postsurgical outcomes and the quality of acute care delivery. ⋯ Despite the known benefits of patient participation in pain management, gaps remain in providing patients with the knowledge and opportunity to take an active role in their recovery. Interventions to overcome identified barriers need to be developed and evaluated.

Assessment of pain in the hospital has often relied on intensity rating alone. To address the gap in meeting patients' pain management expectations, a Midwestern medical center implemented the CAPA (Clinical Aligned Pain Assessment) tool for more comprehensive nursing pain assessments. ⋯ As patient advocates, nurses are integral to thorough assessment and treatment of pain. Findings identified the need for methodological research of CAPA. As with any assessment tool, when using CAPA, ongoing monitoring is needed to address how it is administered, coded, and used for decision-making about pain management.

This narrative review highlights the interventional musculoskeletal techniques that have evolved in recent years. ⋯ The recent progress in pain medicine technologies presented here represents the ideal treatment of the pain patient which is to provide personalized care. Advances in pain physiology research and pain management technologies support each other concurrently. As new technologies give rise to new perspectives and understanding of pain, new research inspires the development of new technologies.

ReviewPerioperative and Periprocedural anesthetic management of opioid tolerant patients and patients with active and medically treated opioid use disorder.
The increasing prevalence of opioid tolerant individuals, in combination with the expanding scope and utilization of nonoperating room anesthesia (NORA) necessitates ongoing investigation into best clinical practice for managing surgical/procedural pain in this population. The purpose of this article is to review recent guidelines, identify specific challenges, and offer considerations for managing pain in patients who are opioid tolerant secondary to opioid use disorder (OUD), with or without medications for the treatment of OUD. ⋯ Clinical recommendations continue to evolve as new consensus guidelines are published, although institution-specific guidelines are most often followed. This review focuses on most recent best practices, within NORA and operating room settings, for managing opioid tolerant patients, patients with OUD and those on medications for the treatment of OUD.
