Guanosine has been reported to exert neuroprotective effects. We recently reported that, following intraperitoneal (i.p.) injection to rats, it resulted to be widely distributed. Its metabolic product guanine also rapidly increased in all the tissues, including brain, after i.p. injection of guanosine and consistently we found a significant enzymatic activity of a soluble purine nucleoside phosphorylase in the plasma of the treated animals. ⋯ Moreover the nucleobase was able to rescue the memory trace also when administered after training. Neither guanosine nor guanine had effects on locomotor activity. These results indicate that guanine can exert important biological activities which may be different from those mediated by its precursor guanosine, thus this evenience should be taken into account when the biological effects of guanosine are evaluated.

Acute myocarditis is an inflammatory disease of the heart muscle that may progress to dilated cardiomyopathy and chronic heart failure. A number of factors including the sex hormone testosterone, components of innate immunity, and profibrotic cytokines have been identified in animal models as important pathogenic mechanisms that increase inflammation and susceptibility to chronic dilated cardiomyopathy. ⋯ However, the diverse presentations of myocarditis and the lack of widely available, safe, and accurate non-invasive diagnostic tests remain major obstacles to early diagnosis and population based research. Recent advances in the understanding of disease pathogenesis described in this review should lead to more accurate diagnostic algorithms and non-invasive tests.

Recurrent trichilemmal carcinoma with a large cutaneous horn formation.
We describe an unusual case of trichilemmal carcinoma accompanied by a large horn formation in a 79-year-old man who presented with a brown tumor mass including a 15-cm-long horn on the vertex for one and a half years. Two months after the surgical removal of the primary tumor, the tumor recurred with a dimension 10x8x8 cm. ⋯ After 2 years, the patient had not shown any recurrence or metastases. We highlight the features that distinguish trichilemmal carcinoma from the other malignant tumors, such as squamous cell carcinoma, basal cell carcinoma, nodular melanoma, or keratoacanthoma.
