Observational StudyEvolution of Clinical Characteristics and Outcomes of Critically Ill Patients 90 Years Old or Older Over a 12-Year Period: A Retrospective Cohort Study.
The global population is aging, and the proportion of very elderly patients 90 years old or older in the ICU is expected to increase. The changes in the comorbidities and outcomes of very elderly patients hospitalized in the ICU that have occurred over time are unknown. ⋯ The number of patients 90 years old or older who were treated in the ICU has increased in recent years. While the patients' clinical characteristics and short-term outcomes have not changed significantly, the long-term mortality of these patients has improved in recent years.

Longitudinal analysis of caloric requirements in critically ill trauma patients: a retrospective cohort study.
Nutrition is of paramount importance in critically ill trauma patients. However, adequate supply is difficult to achieve, as caloric requirements are unknown. This study investigated caloric requirements over time, based on indirect calorimetry, in critically ill trauma patients. ⋯ In critically ill trauma patients, caloric requirements significantly increased and subsequently decreased over time. Younger age, male sex and higher BMI were identified as independent predictors for higher caloric requirements, whereas severe head trauma was associated with lower caloric requirements over time. These results support the use of IC and will help to adjust nutritional support in critically ill trauma patients.

ReviewWhat's new in whole blood resuscitation? In the trauma bay and beyond.
Transfusion therapy commonly supports patient care during life-threatening injury and critical illness. Herein we examine the recent resurgence of whole blood (WB) resuscitation for patients in hemorrhagic shock following trauma and other causes of severe bleeding. ⋯ Whole blood may be transfused as FWB or LTOWB to support a hemostatic approach to hemorrhagic shock management. Although the bulk of WB resuscitation literature has appropriately focused on hemorrhagic shock following injury, extension to other etiologies of severe hemorrhage will benefit from focused inquiry to address cost, efficacy, approach, and patient-centered outcomes.

Multicenter StudyThe role of centre and country factors on process and outcome indicators in critically ill patients with hospital-acquired bloodstream infections.
The primary objective of this study was to evaluate the associations between centre/country-based factors and two important process and outcome indicators in patients with hospital-acquired bloodstream infections (HABSI). ⋯ Centre/country factors should be targeted for future interventions to improve management strategies and outcome of HABSI in ICU patients.

Post-Intensive Care Sequelae in Pediatrics-Results of an Early Rehabilitation Implementation Study.
To compare post-PICU discharge functioning, health-related quality of life (HRQL), and parental stress before and after the implementation of an early rehabilitation bundle. ⋯ We were unable to adequately determine the efficacy of a rehabilitation bundle on patient-centered outcomes as this substudy was not powered for these outcomes. Our results did reveal that persistent low functioning is common in PICU survivors, more common than low HRQL, while experiencing both functional decline and low HRQL was uncommon.
