The COVID-19 pandemic, which started in 2020, resulted in greater all-cause mortality in 2020 and in subsequent years. Whether all-cause mortality remains elevated in 2023 compared to pre-pandemic numbers is unknown. ⋯ Provisional 2023 all-cause mortality rates in the US have decreased from the 2021 peak associated with the COVID-19 pandemic but remain above the pre-pandemic baseline. Mortality from some conditions, including diseases of the heart, appears to have recovered from the impact of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Short-term outcomes of pulmonary embolism are closely related to right ventricular dysfunction and patient's hemodynamic status, but also to individual comorbidity profile. However, the impact of patients' comorbidities on survival during pulmonary embolism might be underrated. Although the Charlson Comorbidity Index (CCI) is the most extensively studied comorbidity index for detecting comorbidity burden, studies analyzing the impact of CCI on pulmonary embolism patients' survival are limited. ⋯ Our study results may help practitioners to better understand and measure the association between an aggravated comorbidity profile and increased in-hospital case fatality in patients with pulmonary embolism.

To describe the clinical burden and healthcare resource utilization associated with managing transfusion-dependent β-thalassemia (TDT) in France. ⋯ Patients with TDT in France experience significant clinical complications, elevated mortality, and substantial healthcare resource utilization driven by frequent RBC transfusion episodes and inpatient hospitalizations. These results reinforce the need for disease-modifying therapies for this patient population.

We accessed the US CDC online database Wonder, which provides nationwide statistics on causes of death between the years 2018-2022. The crude mortality rate for sudden cardiac death (SCD) increased in parallel with age in both sexes, reaching the highest value in subjects aged 85 years or older. In all age groups, the crude death rate was always significantly higher in men than in women. Despite the cumulative number of officially recorded SCDs may be higher between the ages of 60 and 69 years, the risk of dying from SCD appears to increase with population age, peaking after the age of 85.

Respiratory failure (RF) is frequent in hospitalized older patients, but was never systematically investigated in large populations of older hospitalized patients. We conducted a retrospective administrative study based on hospitalizations of a Geriatrics Unit regarding 2014, 2015, and 2016. Patients underwent daily screening for hypoxia. ⋯ Among RF patients, cerebrovascular disease, cancer, electrolyte disturbances, sepsis, and non-invasive ventilation predicted increased, while CHF and COPD predicted decreased in-hospital death/ICU need. The ONCO (cancer) and Mixed (cerebrovascular disease, dementia, pneumonia, sepsis, electrolyte disturbances, bedsores) phenotypes displayed higher in-hospital death/ICU need than CARDIO (CHF) and COPD phenotypes. In this study, RF predicted increased hospital death/ICU need and longer hospital stay, but also reflected diverse underlying conditions and clinical phenotypes that accounted for different clinical courses.
