Performance of the Simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index in predicting 30-day mortality after acute pulmonary embolism: Validation from a large-scale cohort.
The performance of existing prognostic scores including the simplified Pulmonary Embolism Severity Index (sPESI) for short-term mortality of non-high-risk PE in Chinese population has not been widely validated. ⋯ The implementation of the fewer-parameter, easier-to-calculate sPESI in Chinese patients with PE can help to discriminate patients with extremely low risk of short-term mortality for home treatment or early discharge.

A better characterization of deaths in children following emergency care is needed to inform timely interventions. This study aimed to describe the timing, location, and causes of death to 1 year among a cohort of injured and medically ill children. ⋯ The 1-year mortality of children presenting to an ED is 2.2% for injured children and 1.4% for medically ill children with most deaths occurring in the ED. Future interventional trials, quality improvement efforts, and health policy focused in the ED could have the potential to improve outcomes of pediatric patients.

Major traumatic injury in the pediatric population requires further evaluation to improve patient outcomes. Relatively few Canadian studies have investigated pediatric trauma using population-based data. Our objectives were to describe the epidemiology of pediatric major trauma in Nova Scotia and identify factors associated with in-hospital mortality. ⋯ Pediatric trauma remains a major public health issue in Canada and beyond. Greater efforts are required to expand our understanding of trauma epidemiology and develop targeted injury prevention strategies, especially for rural inhabitants.

The objective of this study is to analyze the characteristics of patients who died in the Hospital Emergency Department (HED) of a Spanish third-level hospital, with a special focus on those who died due to SARS-CoV-2. A retrospective cohort study was conducted, including all patients over 18 years old who died in the Hospital Emergency Department (HED) of a Spanish third-level hospital located in Badalona, Spain, from Jun 2019 to Dec 2020. Various sociodemographic, clinical, and diagnostic variables of the patients were analyzed to identify potential risk factors associated with mortality. ⋯ Furthermore, it was found that patients who died from SARS-CoV-2 during the first wave were significantly younger than those in the second wave, with an average age of 78.6 ± 3.1 years in the first wave and 91.8 ± 4.8 years in the second wave. No significant differences were found regarding gender or associated comorbidities. Overall, the mortality rate at the HED in relation to COVID-19 was low, and infected patients died at younger ages during the first wave compared to the second wave.

Electrical burn injuries (EBIs) represent an important subset of burn injuries, but the information on them from the global level is limited. We aimed to investigate the characteristics and risk factors for EBIs reported to the World Health Organization Global Burn Registry. ⋯ The characteristics of EBIs are significantly different from that of non-EBIs. To prevent EBIs and avoid unpleasant outcomes, particular attention should be given to adolescent boys and young adult men who are employed in electrical jobs in lower-income countries.
