Acute kidney injury (AKI) is a severe complication of coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) and is associated with a higher risk of mortality. Understanding the risk factors contributing to COVID-19-related AKI and mortality before vaccination is important for the initiation of preventative measures and early treatment strategies. ⋯ COVID-19-related AKI develops early, exhibits a temporal association with respiratory failure, and is linked to an unfavorable prognosis. The mortality rate increased according to the AKI stage ( p = 0.001). Age, albumin, D-dimer, and ferritin levels, and the underlying chronic kidney disease status upon admission are crucial factors for predicting AKI development, which increases the mortality risk. Monitoring the renal function not only within 10 days of COVID-19 onset, but also within 1 month after the disease onset.

Dutch cardio-oncology cohort: Incident cardiovascular disease predisposes to a higher cancer mortality rate.
Cardiovascular disease (CVD) and cancer are the two leading causes of death worldwide. Given their high prevalence, it is important to understand the disease burden of cancer mortality in CVD patients. ⋯ Results show that CVD predisposes to a higher cancer mortality rate. Of all CVD subtypes, HF patients have the highest cancer mortality rate and the hazards were highest in patients with venous diseases and peripheral artery disease.

The serum calcium plays a role as a cofactor in critical steps such as cardiac contractility, vascular tone, and the coagulation cascade. This study aimed to determine if the level of ionized calcium can predict outcomes in patients with spontaneous subarachnoid hemorrhage (SAH) in the emergency department. ⋯ The ionized calcium level is a readily accessible blood gas parameter that assists clinicians in predicting functional independence and mortality at discharge in patients presenting to the emergency department with spontaneous SAH.

Atrial fibrillation (AF) is a common arrhythmia in patients at high cardiovascular risk. COVID-19 patients with underlying cardiovascular disease are at increased risk of poor clinical outcomes. In this study, we aimed to determine hospital outcomes among patients admitted with AF and COVID-19 infection. ⋯ COVID-19 hospitalized patients frequently have underlying AF, which confers a higher risk of adverse hospital outcomes and mortality, even after adjusting for baseline comorbidities. Heightened awareness is needed in the treatment of hospitalized COVID-19 patients with AF.

Respiratory syncytial virus (RSV) primarily affects infants and children and can manifest as upper airway dysfunction. Patients at the highest risk of increased morbidity and mortality from RSV include those who are immunosuppressed and the elderly. Patients with RSV hepatitis most commonly present with fever, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting; however, patients may present with jaundice and coagulopathies in a severe infection. We describe a first-of-its-kind case of an immunocompetent patient who developed RSV hepatitis after primary infection.
