Health-related quality of life (HRQoL) in patients with chronic diseases is an important tool to measure patient-reported health outcomes and evaluate the usefulness of treatment, management, and rehabilitation programs. Patients with chronic diseases are more likely than those without to experience psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress, all of which can affect HRQoL. This study evaluated the impact of psychological problems such as depression, anxiety, and stress on HRQoL in people with and without chronic diseases in South Korea. ⋯ These results emphasize the need to explore intervention measures that can reduce depression in patients with chronic diseases and anxiety in patients without chronic diseases to improve their HRQoL. In addition, national efforts are needed to provide economic support, as economic status is an influential factor in HRQoL regardless of the presence of chronic disease. The study's limitations include the fact that neither did it consider disease severity among chronically ill patients nor did it examine all the variables affecting HRQoL.

Urolithiasis, or the formation of calculi in the urinary system, represents a prevalent urological condition frequently encountered among individuals aged 30 to 55 years. An in-depth analysis of the composition of these calculi holds significant promise in shedding light on the underlying etiological and pathogenic factors contributing to this ailment. The primary objective of this study was to delineate the principal components comprising urinary system calculi within a cohort of patients who sought medical intervention at a tertiary grade A hospital located in Baoding City. ⋯ Furthermore, the analysis of calculus composition across patients residing in distinct geographical regions did not reveal any statistically significant variations. The identification of components within upper urinary tract calculi plays a pivotal role in elucidating the root causes of calculus formation. This valuable information empowers healthcare professionals, particularly nursing staff, to provide personalized dietary and health guidance to patients, thereby enhancing the quality of care and promoting more effective management of this condition.

Disability and pain associated with lumbar degenerative spondylolisthesis (LDS) result in a significant burden on both the healthcare costs and patients' quality of life. Currently, there exists controversy regarding employment of either nonsurgical management (NSM) or surgical management (SM) in a clinical setting. Spinal canal cross-sectional area (SCA) has been an important morphological parameter for the analysis of LDS. ⋯ In view of the effectiveness of SCA as a prediction factor of surgical option, Receiver Operating Characteristic curve analysis show the optimal cutoff value for SCA as 83.21 mm2, with 70.8% sensitivity, 71.4% specificity, and an area under the curve of 0.80 (95% CI, 0.73-0.87). The narrower the SCA, the higher the probability of SM. Thus, it is proposed that to evaluate surgical decision making, the pain physician should carefully inspect the SCA.

The Occupational Health and Safety Administration has identified indoor industries at risk of experiencing heat-related illnesses due to the presence of heat-generating appliances; these include bakeries, kitchens, laundries, and furnaces. This study aimed to assess the effects of heat stress on haematological parameters and erythrocyte sedimentation rates (ESR) of bakery workers in Ilorin, Kwara State. It was a cross-sectional study, involving laboratory analysis, which lasted for 3 months. ⋯ TWBC was also found to be high (7.425 ± 1.74) compared to (6.95 ± 2.49) of the control population. Findings from this study concluded that working under high temperatures negatively affected the health of bakery workers with reports of heat stress-related symptoms and also affected ESR and haematological parameters. A comprehensive and effective national occupational health and safety program that includes relevant policies, decrees, and proper enforcement is needed to ensure the worker's safety and health both in the formal and the fast-growing informal sectors.

Unusual blood clots can cause serious health problems, such as lung embolism, stroke, and heart attack. Inhibiting thrombin activity was adopted as an effective strategy for preventing blood clots. In this study, we explored computational-based method for designing peptide inhibitors of human thrombin therapeutic peptides to prevent platelet aggregation. ⋯ Our result showed the 5-mer peptide AEGYA, EVVNQ, and FASRW with inhibitory activity against thrombin, range from 0.53 to 4.35 μM. In vitro anti-platelet aggregation assay was carried out, suggesting the 3 peptides can inhibit the platelet aggregation induced by thrombin. This study showed computer-aided peptide inhibitor design can be a robust method for finding potential binders for thrombin, which provided solutions for anticoagulation.
