Is the employee-organization relationship dying or thriving? A temporal meta-analysis.
There is controversy concerning whether, in recent years, organizational failures to act benevolently toward employees have lessened employees' social-exchange relationship (SER) with their work organization or whether, on the contrary, organizations' more favorable treatment of employees has strengthened the SER. With samples of U. S. employees, we examined changes over the past 3 decades in three key elements of the SER: perceived organizational support (POS: 317 samples, including 121,469 individuals), leader-member exchange (LMX: 191 samples, including 216,975 individuals), and affective organizational commitment (383 samples, including 116,766 individuals). ⋯ LMX and affective commitment show levels near neutral, and POS has increased to only a moderately positive level. In contrast, the relationships between these elements with distributive and procedural justice and extra-role performance remain substantial. These findings suggest that employees on average do not currently have strong exchange relationships with their work organization but remain ready to more fully engage based on perceived voluntary favorable treatment by the work organization and its representatives. Introducing physician assistants into an intensive care unit: process, problems, impact and recommendations.
The National Health Service (NHS) is facing substantial staffing challenges arising from reduced working hours, fewer trainees and more protected training of those trainees. Although increasing consultant-delivered care helps to meet these challenges, there remains a need to remodel the workforce. One component of the solution is physician assistants (PAs), who are professionals trained in patient assessment and care, working under the supervision of trained doctors. ⋯ When surveyed at 10 months, PAs were undertaking most PICU procedures, albeit with some supervision. The study shows that PAs can be a valuable addition to the medical workforce, but that predictable problems can mar their introduction. Solutions are suggested for other units intending to follow this model.

To determine the effectiveness of the revised Risk Analysis Index (RAI-rev), administrative Risk Analysis Index (RAI-A), cancer-corrected Risk Analysis Index [RAI-rev (cancer-corrected)], and 5-variable modified Frailty Index for predicting 30-day morbidity and mortality in patients undergoing high-risk surgery. ⋯ The presently studied frailty indices are ineffective predictors of 30-day morbidity and mortality for patients undergoing high-risk operations.

Does task significance increase job performance? Correlational designs and confounded manipulations have prevented researchers from assessing the causal impact of task significance on job performance. To address this gap, 3 field experiments examined the performance effects, relational mechanisms, and boundary conditions of task significance. ⋯ In Experiment 3, conscientiousness and prosocial values moderated the effects of task significance on the performance of new fundraising callers. The results provide fresh insights into the effects, relational mechanisms, and boundary conditions of task significance, offering noteworthy implications for theory, research, and practice on job design, social information processing, and work motivation and performance.
