Complementary medication is en vogue and an increasing number of patients consume herbal medicine without reporting their use to physicians. We report a case of iodine-induced hyperthyroidism due to the ingestion of a kelp-containing tea. A 39-year-old woman with multinodular goiter presented with typical signs of hyperthyroidism, which was confirmed by endocrine tests. ⋯ However, a detailed medical history revealed that she had been treated for a period of 4 weeks by a Chinese alternative practitioner with a herbal tea containing kelp because of her enlarged thyroid. The consumption of the tea was discontinued and an antithyroid drug therapy was initiated. Physicians should advise patients with underlying thyroid disease to avoid all complementary or alternative medications containing iodine.

To estimate the effects of red light camera enforcement on per capita fatal crash rates at intersections with signal lights. ⋯ The study adds to the large body of evidence that red light camera enforcement can prevent the most serious crashes. Communities seeking to reduce crashes at intersections should consider this evidence.

Sleep disturbances and burnout are possibly related to each other, although the exact nature of this relationship is still under investigation. The purpose of the study was to investigate the prevalence of insomnia and its relation with burnout levels in a group of nurses working in psychiatric, pediatric, internal medicine and surgery departments in the public hospitals of central Greece. ⋯ Insomnia and burnout scales are linearly related to each other. Younger nurses are particular vulnerable to insomnia. Job reform should target at younger nurses and those working on surgical departments who might also benefit from additional education and training to reduce insomnia and burnout. Strategies and synergies underlying replacement of vestibular function with prosthetic feedback.
This study investigated changes in movement strategies and muscle synergies when bilateral peripheral vestibular loss (BVL) subjects are provided prosthetic feedback of their pelvis sway during stance. Six BVL subjects performed 3, for them, difficult stance tasks: standing eyes closed, on a firm surface, on a foam surface, and standing eyes open on foam. Movement strategies were recorded as roll and pitch ratios of upper and lower body velocities with body-worn gyroscopes. ⋯ This is the first study that demonstrates how vestibular loss subjects achieve a reduction of sway during stance with prosthetic feedback. Unchanged movement strategies with reduced amplitudes are achieved with reduced antagonistic muscle synergies. This study has implications for the choice of feedback parameters (angle or velocity) and patient groups when using prosthetic devices to reduce sway of those with a tendency to fall.

To determine the factors associated with exercise capacity. ⋯ In an adult population of individuals who were referred for exercise stress testing, African-Americans were more obese and had significantly lower exercise capacity than their white counterparts. Emphasis on weight reduction and increasing physical fitness is particularly needed for the prevention of cardiovascular diseases in African-Americans.
