AbstractThe purpose of this study was to identify institutions in which scholarly productivity in nursing is occurring. All articles appearing in 13 nursing journals intended for a general nursing audience during 1978 through 1982 were tabulated according to institutional affiliation of author, geographic location of institution, and highest degree obtained by the author. More than half of the 3,792 articles appeared in American Journal of Nursing, Nursing, and RN, and 56.1% originated in the North Central and Mid-Atlantic areas. Nurses wrote 76.7% of the articles, and nurses with at least a master's degree wrote almost two thirds of those articles. There were 32 institutions in which at least 15 articles originated during the 5 years studied. Twenty-one of the 32 top-ranking institutions offer doctoral programs in nursing. The four top-ranking institutions, according to number of publications, are the Universities of Washington, Pennsylvania, California at San Francisco, and Michigan.
