    AbstractCauses of septic multiple organ failure are endotoxin induced mechanisms, exotoxin induced mechanisms and sepsis associated immunosuppression. Pharmacological intervention is limited. Therapy is restricted to aggressive surgical treatment in terms of eradication of the source of infection combined with supportive intensive care medicine. The prevention of systemic infections is mandatory. Approaches to new therapeutical concepts are outlined.
