    AbstractThis article describes the current problem of anaemia in hospital patients, functional iron deficiency and reviews the current roles of intravenous iron therapy. Attention to and correction of anaemia in the hospital patient may reduce the reliance for blood transfusion, with improvement in the patient's quality of life and outcomes.
