AbstractHuman immunodeficiency virus (HIV) rates are increasing in the UK. However, the public's knowledge of HIV and routes of transmission is reducing. A third of people who are HIV positive in the UK are unaware of their diagnosis. This article outlines the difference between HIV and acquired immune deficiency syndrome (AIDS) and discusses the routes of transmission and treatments available. The author highlights the importance of HIV testing and suggests ways in which testing could be initiated in practice.
