    AbstractPreoperative cardiac risk assessment for noncardiac thoracic surgery is limited by the lack of data specific to this type of surgery, especially prospective, controlled data. However, the value of clinical predictors in determining accurate postoperative cardiac outcomes is a reliable tool. Thus, the approach is similar to traditional cardiac risk assessment for noncardiac surgery. The essential elements of cardiovascular evaluation as it pertains to noncardiac thoracic surgery are reviewed with a specific focus on coronary artery disease, perioperative arrhythmias, and selected topics relevant to noncardiac thoracic surgery. The core recommendations of the clinical guidelines by the American College of Cardiology and American Heart Association are discussed in the context of noncardiac thoracic surgery.Copyright 2001 by W.B.
