AbstractThere is no other field of neurology where clinically relevant serological biomarkers have witnessed a surge in importance over the past decade resembling that in autoimmune encephalitis and cerebellitis. A multitude of newly discovered neuronal autoantibodies facilitate early diagnosis, estimation of prognosis, and therapeutic decision-making. However, this has led to growing uncertainty with regard to meaningful patient selection, the appropriate extent of testing, and management of seronegative cases. This review summarizes the essential aspects of the clinical presentation, diagnostic work-up, pathophysiology, and treatment of autoimmune encephalitis and cerebellitis.
