    AbstractTwo recent papers in Cell and Developmental Cell provide evidence that VEGF directs arterial differentiation. Evidence that sensory nerves direct arteriogenesis and that the membrane-spanning Notch signaling system is downstream of VEGF emphasize the paracrine regulation of vessel formation.
