AbstractCataract surgery is one of the most common medical procedures among persons age 65 and older. Once an inpatient procedure, it has become a simple outpatient surgery with extremely low rates of morbidity. With the development of implantable intraocular lenses (IOLs), patients undergoing cataract surgery gained the benefit of corrected pre-existing refractive error, astigmatism, and presbyopia. This article reviews developments in cataract surgery and describes current IOL technology.
