AbstractThis review is concerned with the buffering hypothesis, which states that social support ameliorates the impact of occupational stress and other stressful situations on employees' mental and physical health. The author deals with various ways by which management and occupational and mental health professionals can use research findings on social support to the benefit of employees in the work organization and the organization itself.
