BackgroundPrehabilitation proposes that broad health interventions at the time of decision for surgery will improve the patient's starting functional status and therefore recovery.MethodsThe impact of preoperative exercise, preoperative nutrition, smoking cessation, alcohol cessation, anemia, and psychological support were reviewed.ResultsInterventions to improve the patient's underlying health typically improve recovery, although the duration and intensity necessary for meaningful surgical recovery benefit need further study.ConclusionsPreoperative health interventions may improve recovery in the postoperative period and patient health years later.
