AbstractAn unusual case is presented of repeated, life-threatening self mutilation, elicited by the topical application of sodium hydroxide, which necessitated several operations, including amputation of the left lower leg. Histological examination revealed colliquation necrosis and a striking eosinophilia. The latter feature, which was not reproducible in an animal experiment, may be related to a defect of leucocyte locomotion in the present case.
