AbstractOver the past 10 years, significant strides have been made in the understanding, development, and availability of sleep disorder therapeutics. In this review series, we discuss the current evidence surrounding the mechanisms of actions, indications, efficacy, and adverse side effects associated with the available armamentarium of sleep over-the-counter and pharmacotherapeutics. This article is the first of a two-part series that covers the therapeutics for insomnia and circadian rhythm disorders.
