AbstractThe principle of flow diversion is the newest endovascular concept for the treatment of intracranial aneurysms. These flow-diverting devices have a narrow mesh system and lead to aneurysm occlusion by reconstructing the vessel wall and by changing the hemodynamic blood flow within the aneurysm. The aim of flow diverting devices is the treatment of complex intracranial aneurysms, such as wide-necked, fusiform and giant aneurysms, which in the past could only be treated interventionally with a relatively high risk. The purpose of this article is to give an overview of this new alternative in the treatment of intracranial aneurysms.
