AbstractChronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) is the fourth-leading cause of death in the United States, and the mortality rate continues to rise. Cigarette smoking is the major cause. COPD is preventable and treatable. Early recognition is important to decrease morbidity and mortality.
