AbstractCurrent guidelines endorse low-dose computed tomography (LDCT) screening for smokers and former smokers aged 55 to 74, with at least a 30-pack-year smoking history. Adherence to published algorithms for nodule follow-up is strongly encouraged. Future directions for screening research include risk stratification for selection of the screening population and improvements in the diagnostic follow-up for indeterminate pulmonary nodules. Screening for lung cancer with LDCT has revealed that there are indolent lung cancers that may not be fatal. More research is necessary if the risk-benefit ratio in lung cancer screening is to be maximized.Copyright © 2014 Elsevier Inc. All rights reserved.
