    AbstractExtensive evidence has now accumulated on the health benefits of smoking cessation. With few exceptions, disease risks are reduced following smoking cessation and continue to drop as abstinence is maintained. The review of the evidence in the 1990 Report of the Surgeon General led to major conclusions that establish smoking cessation as a clear priority for health care providers.
