AbstractAcute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS) and acute lung injury (ALI) are distinctly modern clinical entities. Recent epidemiologic research has taken advantage of large cohorts in efforts to better describe these highly lethal syndromes with a focus on differentiation of clinically meaningful subtypes and early prediction in an effort to improve treatment and prevention. This article identifies the most significant studies and systematic reviews of recent years, defining the incidence, mortality, risk and prognostic factors, and etiologic classes of ARDS/ALI.Copyright © 2011 Elsevier Inc.
