AbstractBased upon the definition of pain by the International Association for the Study of Pain, the concept of pain has been differentiated into nociception, sensation, experience and behaviour (Loeser's model). The physiology of the modulation of pain is represented by the theory of Melzack & Wall. Some specific childhood problems in the experience and the assessment of pain are discussed.
