AbstractThe prevalence of asthma was determined by a parental questionnaire in 9403 schoolchildren aged 9-11 years. A cold air challenge was done in 7248 of these children to test for bronchial hyperresponsiveness. Regarding the doctor diagnoses of asthma as reported by the parental questionnaire the specificity of the cold air challenge was 92.5%, the sensitivity 28.7%, the positive predictive value 9.1% and the negative predictive value 98%.
