AbstractThe position of large teaching hospitals in the NHS is being challenged by changing patterns of medical education and the expansion of services offered by acute hospitals. The clinical activity of teaching hospitals is now similar to that of district general hospitals. The future of teaching hospitals may lie in becoming centres of research excellence.
