AbstractFirearm violence has reached an alarming level. The devastation that results from firearms has severe implications for the individual and society. Interventions for patients suffering firearm injuries must begin at the scene and continue through the many phases of illness including emergency care, critical care, intermediate care, rehabilitation, and home care. Nurses are in the prime position to coordinate the many phases of care, with the outcome being to incorporate the victim back into society. Prevention is the key to reducing firearm violence through awareness, education, and legislation.
