AbstractOn 16 October 1846, William T.G. Morton performed the first successful demonstration of ether anaesthesia. The news quickly spread to Europe; reports reached the Scandinavian countries in early 1847. The first ether anaesthesia was administered in Norway at Rikshospitalet, the teaching hospital of the only Norwegian university at the time, on 4 March 1847. The number of surgical procedures increased; medical practice was changed.
