AbstractSince 2000 the annual use of laboratory animals in Denmark has remained constant at approx. 350,000 animals. Two thirds, i.e. approx. 220,000 of these, were used for medical research. The majority (48-69%) were used for research in neurological and psychiatric diseases, while 7-13% were used for cancer research, and 2-3% for cardiovascular research. The use of rabbits has declined since 2000, while the use of pigs is increasing.
